When we hear Camper, most of us will think of the bold and modern shoe designs of the popular Majorcan brand. But Camper is not just a brand of shoes. It is also a model of van that combines transport and home in a single space. A very cosy and travelling space.

The first Vw Camper vans, 1950s

The first proper camper vans, if we exclude some of the wagons from the Wild West, were created by the German brand Volkswagen. Back in the 1950s on their popular ‘Bulli’ ‘Kombi’ or T1 model, as they became commercially known.

Far from the heavy armatostes called motorhomes, the Germans began to make history in 1951 with the creation of the first ‘Campervan’ by Westfalia. In 1960 came the lift-up roof and the second upper bed. And already in 1968 with the Vw T2 ‘Bay Window’ the model was fully pupularised, which has survived to the present day with the Vw T5 California and the T3 and T4. One day we will go through the models one by one.

What is a camper van?

Many people wonder what a camper van really is and what advantages it has over the super-equipped motorhomes. Well, it is a vehicle that, while retaining practically all the dynamic qualities of a car, allows you to take with you everything you might need, for eating, sleeping, travelling...

Based on a van and without exceeding its original dimensions. Its interior is equipped with a kitchen, fridge, sink, cupboards, bed... What amounts to a small mobile home that, moreover, goes completely unnoticed on the outside.

And because they don't have a great height or overhangs, they don't have any problems when travelling on narrow roads, nor when driving in the city streets. They are also more economical in terms of fuel consumption. Is it clear what a campervan is? We can only explain it better in another way: Here . Rent a Camper this summer and try it out - you're sure to be convinced!
